Delhi Sealing : MCD has started unsealing Delhi

6 02 2008

Last Friday, the government passed a notification, declaring all structures constructed in the capital before January 2006 safe for at least one year.

The move is expected to benefit over 3,000 properties that were sealed for violating the Delhi Master Plan 2021.

But the MCD is going very slow on unsealing. Some MCD officials say they would rather wait for the Supreme Court’s nod, which is supposed to hear the sealing case on February 12.

In a major relief to the trader community, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday started the process of unsealing the properties in the national capital.

The move is likely to benefit lakhs of traders, who were on the verge of losing their shops and factories as a part of the sealing drive in several localities.

The unsealing of properties has started following a go-ahead given by the Supreme Court to act on the order issued by the Centre.

Earlier, the Centre had sent a notice to the Delhi government to stop the demolition of all encroachments and unseal all properties that were sealed as a part of the drive.

Even as uncertainty looms large on the Centre’s hurried notification aimed at nullifying the Supreme Court’s (SC’s) sealing order, a social organization, Delhi Pradesh Citizen Council, challenged on Tuesday the validity of the law for benefiting commercial establishments in the election year.

The court-appointed monitoring committee has, however, asked all civic bodies to not start unlocking shops and offices unless the apex court upheld its legality.

Challenging the January 30 notification, the council said it had been issued for political consideration and was an attempt to overreach the court’s orders. It also termed the notification “colourable exercise” aimed at protecting violators of civic laws.
