SC orders MCD to resume sealing

August 27th, 2007 admin

Supreme Court monitoring committee has directed Municipal Cooperation of Delhi (MCD) to seal big shops in 1,500 unauthorized colonies.

MCD approached the court on Friday saying they can’t carry out sealing operations because according to their assessment more than 40 lakh people will be affected.

MCD also argued for the illegal shops saying that government has already passed a proposal to legalise these colonies and are only waiting a formal notification.

The apex court however rejected all appeals of leniency. The court said the rules would not be changed for unauthorized colonies.

So barring shops such as barber shops, STD booths and cyber cafes that are exempt from sealing or which are small 20 sq ft in size, all big showrooms have to shut shop in three weeks.
