Congress Councillors in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Monday welcomed the proposed new Master Plan for Delhi-2021, claiming that citizens and traders in the Capital can now look forward to relief from demolitions and the sealing drive.

MCD Standing Committee member Sanjay Puri at a meeting of Councillors here said that with the implementation of the Master Plan, private schools in the city would not face sealing and the poor and the middle class would benefit from the 24 lakh residential units that would be constructed. MCD House leader Jitendra Kochar welcomed the provisions allowing marriage functions to be held in motels and basements to be used for carrying out professional work. He said for each zone of the DDA, zonal markets would be set up for wholesale trade and in colonies where commercial markets were run prior to 1962, all commercial activities would be allowed on nine-metre-wide roads without levying any conversion charges.

Mr. Kochar said the road width limit in respect of C and D categories had been reduced from 18 metres to 12 metres where commercial activities would be allowed. In A and B categories the prescribed limit of road width for commercial activities has been reduced from 18 metres to 13.5 metres, he said.

In the Janata, LIG and resettlement colonies, Mr. Kochar said, shops would be allowed to run on the ground floor and in villages and unauthorised colonies, mixed land use would be allowed on the ground floor as well.

The councillors welcomed the move to commercialise areas of the Walled City, thereby spelling relief for the traders in markers including, Khari Baoli, Chawri Bazar, Sadar Bazar and Chandni Chowk.
